Rose Bowl Tailgating

I love to talk food.  Next to that is football.  So what better place for me to hang out on New Year's Day than the Pasadena Rose Bowl?

Attending the Pasadena Rose Bowl game is slowly becoming a tradition of mine.  I was at today's big game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Oregon Ducks.  I would much rather see my favorite team, the USC Trojans, in the Rose Bowl but it was not a good year for SC so they had to play in the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco last week.

Today I was cheering for Oregon in hopes that another Pac 10 team would win another bowl game this year.  I was also cheering for the thousands of fans who were here showing off their tailgating skills.

The weather was clear and the temp was in the 70's.  A perfect day for setting up the grill and watching the game.  Before game time I was walking the grounds enjoying samples of food/game talk with the tailgaters.  I really admire the amount of effort these folks put in to their set up.

There are so many creative ways to serve up that gut-sticking food, which we shouldn't eat all of the time, but sometimes there are days that you really feel the need to pack it in.  I must confess that I battled and won a bought with a foot-long hot dog smothered in chili and topped with melted nacho cheese sauce.  Then I washed it all down with a huge soda.

Later I was offered a beer from a couple of guys who were walking around with a 12 pack and a half.  As I reached for the beer, I asked if it was cold.  They said "cold enough." I guess it was cold enough for these college kids, but this old guy likes his beer colder than room temp.  Then I remembered that this was a free beer and I'd have to pay 9 dollars for a beer inside the stadium.

Speaking of being inside the stadium, I was glad that I ate before I found my seat.  There was guy two rows behind me who spent too much time in the beer garden before the game.  He lost his lunch about 30 seconds into the 2nd quarter.  Game over for that guy.

I am still trying to digest all of the food I ate today, but it's a New Year so I'll be back in the gym starting tomorrow....yeah right.
